We all love to overcomplicate things. It makes it more interesting while often justifying whatever distraction we have at the time.
The simplicity of life is that we should aim to get what we want.
If you stay close to that core, your life will be the best it can be.
How do you get what you want?
Step 1: You realise that you have no clue what you truly want. Most of us are subconsciously affected by marketing and other’s viewpoints so much that we don’t know what we want to achieve. Other times, there is so much choice that we get choice paralysis.
The only way to find out is to take action by trial and error. Start fast, quit even faster if it doesn’t feel right.
Step 2: Replace negative distractions with positive ones. Most of us are permanently distracted. Chores, procrastination, perfectionism, fear… you name it. Anything that is not focused on improving the skills that you need to get what you want is a distraction. Distractions are necessary to refresh yourself but they must not hold you back.
For example, hard drugs are an obvious bad distraction. Replacing that with alcohol is not ideal but better. Replacing alcohol with a sweet soda drink is not ideal but better. Replacing soda drink with fruit juice is not ideal but better. Replacing fruit juice with water? Perfect.
Replacing hard parties every day during the weekend with once a week? Better. Replacing going out with going on a trip doing some sport that you enjoy? Perfect.
The point of distractions is to relax a little. Take a break. Once refreshed, you should go back chasing what you want so that you do not lose the momentum. Momentum is like an antidote to distractions. The more momentum you have, the less distractions affect you (good or bad ones). The less momentum, the more distractions you have.
Step 3: Focus on learning skills
Getting what you want is all about investing in yourself and your skills rather than anything else. Not your finances, not your assets, not your relationships. It’s all about your skills. If you improve the core skills in life (communication, leadership, self-awareness, ability to learn) then you will always have an abundance of finances, assets and relationships. With that abundance, you can choose how much of those things you want. Some will want more, some will want less but you will have the choice rather than taking what is given to you.
Step 4: Continuous improvement
You cannot settle. People will always only admire you for your dedication to getting what you want. If you stop doing that, even if you already have a lot of things, then you will lose the purpose of life and others will feel it. You can occasionally slow down and focus on some pleasurable distractions, but they must be as a motivational means to getting back on track.
Step 5: Integrity and Spirituality
Getting what you want at all costs will occasionally come to moral dilemmas. It’s when integrity and spirituality can come into question. Always choose the path that keeps your integrity and spirituality. It is the best long term strategy because dishonesty and lack of spirituality leads to higher levels of distraction. Lying takes up a lot of mental power. Lack of spirituality will cause you to doubt the purpose of what you want to achieve.
Keep it simple. Any time you have a dilemma, keep your integrity, take a step back so that you can run 2 steps forward later. It will pay off.
Step 6: Keep people that have similar mindset
The path to getting what you want is lonely. Most people are too distracted to do that. If you find others who are on their journey and they themselves show signs of integrity, then you join forces to help each other. With likeminded people, it is easy and enjoyable.
