This may seem like a stupid question. Of course not. But why? Why do we enjoy scrolling reels so much until eventually feeling guilty? Why are funny cat videos so addictive? Why do I procrastinate so much when I know I want to achieve more?
Life tells us that many people can and do. Good entertainment is so cheap and easily available that it becomes harder to convince yourself that you need to do more. Combine this with the victim/blame culture and changing our life around becomes harder.
The truth is that with 8 billion people on earth, we can’t all be millionaires with super bodies and perfect relationships. But that isn’t an excuse as to why ‘you’ shouldn’t meet your goals.
In my other articles, I have written how focussing on one goal at a time and using the same dopamine reward systems that Netflix and Instagram use can help you achieve your dreams.
But even if we could, why should we want to be above average? Why should we stop blaming politics and wanting the world leaders to make positive change?
Because the cliché, if you want to change the world, change yourself first is the truth. Pick something that you want to get better at and do it. Then keep doing it until it no longer interests you. Some things will stay with you for a short time, some will be life-long passions, but the real reward is that no matter whether you want to push the boundaries on sport, climate change, social behaviour, you can. You can.
Life is unfair and it will try and slow you down, but instead of blaming the bureaucracy, use the anger to fuel your next move. Or don’t – and enjoy TikTok and the next big entertainment channel. Someone else will do it instead, and they may not have as good intentions as you do.
